If you follow health fads, cold-pressed juices are all the rage right now. But, do cold pressed juice have benefits over other, less expensive juices?

What is Cold Pressed Juice?
Cold Pressed juice by definition is the process that fresh foods are preserved using High Pressure Processing (HPP) as opposed to heat, often up to 87,000 PSI.
HPP is also known as Pascalization. It’s a method of preserving food products using extremely high pressure. The process leads to the elimination of harmful bacteria (they die at 60,000 PSI), while maintaining a higher yield of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, and preserving a fresher taste.
The FDA recognizes HHP for preserving freshness and increasing shelf life without preservatives or high heat.
The best companies sell cold press juice made from whole foods, by far healthier and better for us. Many focus on smaller, local farms and the highest quality foods.
Why Cold Pressed Raw Juices are Better?
Unpasteurized (and even quite a number of heat pasteurized) juices contain harmful bacteria. Certain ones are able to slip past the treatments or have even become immune to it. Many of the treated juices use artificial flavorings, sugars, and preservatives to maintain consistency. If you are trying to avoid these additives, know many manufacturers have devised ways of adding them without having to label them.
Cold Pressing destroys bacteria on a structural level and preserves the taste and quality that heat and chemical pasteurization destroys. You don’t have to worry about bacteria and your juice retains freshness, taste, and quality.
HHP also extends shelf life of hard to preserve fruits and vegetables. The average is about 6 weeks for commercial juices. Of course, if you are making it at home, you certainly won’t have juice lasting that long. Just remember, anytime you leave the juice open to air, it will pick up bacteria. Only chemicals prevent that. If you keep your juice sealed properly, it will last several weeks.
Pros
- This method of extracting juice retains more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and taste than any other method (except eating fresh). It’s a great way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet easily.
- The taste of cold pressed juices is unmatched. You can prepare a large batch and store it properly and still have it taste absolutely fresh 2-weeks later!
- There are more fruits and vegetables per ounce than in standard juices. There are approximately 16 oranges in a 59oz container of orange juice from most big brands. That’s only about 4 oranges in 16oz. Cold pressed juicer puts all 16 oranges in 16oz, or a 4-fold increase. And it does this for all the juices. You can double to 10-times the whole food value in each drink!
- When you juice at home, you can save money and control the quality of the ingredients. When you purchase ready-made juices, you can choose the quality the company stands for. Fortunately, nearly all cold-juicing companies choose organic, local, and/or top quality produce.
- This juice has good consistency. Lately, people have complained the big companies are watering down their juice. Cold-pressed juices retain more pulp and fiber, so the juice is a bit thicker. Some people prefer it that way. If you don’t, just add a bit of water!
Cons
- Price! Cold-pressed juices take the juice, sugars, and some nutrients from whole, fresh foods and converts it into an easy to drink form. Each bottle or glass of juice contains several pieces of fruit. If you want a true comparison of the price of the juice to whole foods, calculate what several apples, a bunch of kale, a fresh lemon, a bag of carrots, a couple of beets, and a handful of fresh herbs and spices cost. Then add in how long it takes you to pick them out, clean them, cut them up and eat them. I think you will find now the juice cost is much more reasonable.
- A cold-press juice cleanse can help you detox. It does allow the body to relax and re-hydrate when the cleanse is 1-3 days. However, drinking only cold-pressed juices does not provide all the nutrients you need to be healthy in the long-term. You also want to talk to your doctor before doing any cleanse.
- It works best with high-acid foods. Because low-acid foods can harbor botulism, you need to stick with high-acid foods. Commercial companies use special blends to balance out the acidity.
The Cold Pressed Juice Health Benefits
This method preserves the majority of enzymes, nutrients, and fiber. It becomes an easy and delicious way to get several servings of fruits and vegetables in every day. Some of the juices have been compared to taking a multi-vitamin because they have so many nutrients.
For kids, it’s a good way to introduce them to eating healthier, whole foods and get them interested in fruits and vegetables.
If you choose to cleanse, these juices provide the necessary nutrients and carbohydrates to keep you feeling well for the couple of days of the cleanse. Because they contain fiber and enzymes, it is easy to digest, they can fill you up, and your body easily adjusts to the lightened load. Just remember to talk to your doctor before starting any cleanse.
